Present Indefinite Tense

The Present Indefinite Tense, also known as the Simple Present Tense, is one of the basic verb tenses in English grammar. It is used to express actions that are habitual, routine, general truths, or timeless facts. This tense is not tied to a specific point in time and is often used to describe activities that occur regularly, facts that are generally true, or actions that are part of one's routine.

Affirmative/positive Sentences

For Plural:

For first-person singular (I) and plural (we, you, they):

Use the base form of the verb.

Examples:

"میں کتاب پڑھتا ہوں" (I read a book).

"ہم گانا گاتے ہیں" (We sing a song).

 "تم کتاب پڑھتے ہو" (You read a book).

For Singular:

 For Third Person Singular (he, she, it):

Add 's/es' to the base form of the verb.

Examples:

 "وہ کتاب پڑھتا ہے" (He reads a book).

 "وہ لڑکی گانا گاتی ہے" (She sings a song).

 "بارش ہوتی ہے" (It rains).

Rules for e or es

In English, the addition of 's' or 'es' to verbs in the Present Indefinite Tense (third person singular) follows certain rules:

1. Verbs ending in -s, -ss, -sh, -ch, -x, or -o:

   - For verbs ending in these letters, add 'es' to the base form.

     - Example: "passes," "misses," "washes," "catches," "fixes," "goes."

2. Verbs ending in a consonant + y:

   - Change the 'y' to 'i' and add 'es.'

     - Example: "tries" (try + es), "flies" (fly + es), "studies" (study + ies).

3. Verbs ending in a vowel + y:

   - Add 's' directly.

     - Example: "plays," "stays," "pays."

4. Verbs ending in a single vowel + a single consonant:

   - Double the final consonant before adding 'es' if the stress is on the final syllable.

     - Example: "stops," "drags," "swims."

5. Verbs ending in -ie:

   - Change the -ie to -y and add 's.'

     - Example: "flies" (lie + s), "tries" (tie + s).

6. Irregular Verbs:

   - Some verbs do not follow these regular patterns and must be memorized.

     - Example: "has," "does," "says."

These rules apply specifically to the third person singular (he, she, it) in the Present Indefinite Tense. For all other pronouns (I, you, we, they), and for most irregular verbs, the base form of the verb is used without any additional 's' or 'es.'

Negative Sentences:

Structure:

• For regular verbs:

  • Subject + Negative auxiliary verb "do not" (don't) + Verb (base form) + Object
  • Example: "I do not play tennis." or "I don't play tennis."

• For third person singular (he, she, it), add 's' or 'es' to the auxiliary verb "does not" (doesn't).

  • Example: "He does not play tennis." or "He doesn't play tennis."

Interrogative Sentences:

Structure:

• For regular verbs:

  • Auxiliary verb "do" + Subject + Verb (base form) + Object + ?
  • Example: "Do you play tennis?"

• For third person singular (he, she, it), use "does" as the auxiliary verb.
